South Burlington Homes
The City of South Burlington is a major suburb of Burlington and home to about 16,500 residents. The city boasts the largest mall in the state, University Mall, and a major commercial center along both sides of Route 7. Its proximity to Burlington ensures that South Burlington is at the center of the action in Chittenden County, offering everything from retail shopping to boating on beautiful Lake Champlain.
Education
The town of South Burlington has one of the top school districts in the area, with nearly 20% of it’s students electing to attend from other towns. The district features three K-5 elementary schools, two middle schools, and the South Burlington High School. South Burlington is also home to Rice Memorial High School, a coeducational Roman Catholic school, which consists of about 400 students from the surrounding region.
Town Life and Activities
Though known as a local center for commerce, there are also many enjoyable activities available in South Burlington. The town features over twenty miles of paved bike paths that connect South Burlington's parks, schools, and neighborhoods. In a shining example of community team effort, over 500 individuals, groups and businesses donated funds to help build the path, and over 100 volunteers have served on the committee to maintain and expand this wonderful town program. The South Burlington path also connects to the Burlington Bike Path system, and has plans for future expansion! There are also seven public parks in South Burlington, with Red Rocks Park on Lake Champlain being perhaps the most celebrated. This park is open year-round and exhibits exceptionally beautiful rock formations, miles of nature trails, and a splendid beach. A lifeguard is kept on duty from June 26th to August 15th, so parents with children can relax as well.
The city also features the South Burlington Community Library, conveniently located off Dorset Street. The Recreation and Parks department offers a wide array of indoor and outdoor activities for people of all ages, including everything from classes in golf, jazzercise and yoga, to arts & crafts programs. For families with children, the department also provides special vacation programs and summer camps tailored for youths. There are also a wide variety of sports leagues for adults of all ages, including men’s and women's basketball leagues. So as you can see, it's no mystery the City of South Burlington was honored as the Top Best Town for Families by Family Circle Magazine in 2008!
Business
South Burlington’s business district is well-known for it’s fine dining restaurants, and there are plenty of tasty options to choose from, including local favorites such as “The Rotisserie,” as well as many of the best known dining chains. The University Mall is a fun and convenient place to shop, and both Shelburne Road and Williston Road are stocked with major retailers to fit any shopping need. Plus, nestled among the larger retailers, many local businesses offer delicacies that can only be found in Vermont, adding to the attraction of the business district.
There are many major employers located right in South Burlington, such as the famous Magic Hat Brewing company, the Ben and Jerry’s headquarters, and GE Healthcare. South Burlington is also within easy commuting distance to IBM in Essex, and General Dynamics in Burlington. Fletcher Allen Healthcare, the largest hospital in Vermont, is also only minutes away from South Burlington.
Transportation
South Burlington is serviced by CCTA, the superb local public transportation system, which offers bus routes throughout Chittenden county, including routes into Burlington. Amtrak offers rail service from the nearby Essex transportation terminal, which connects St. Albans, Vermont to Washington D.C. The Burlington International Airport (BTV) is located in South Burlington, and offers commercial flights on Continental, Delta, JetBlue, and others. South Burlington is also connected to the region by Interstate 89 and 189, and Routes 2 and 7.
